The Boise State University VPN (Virtual Private Network) provides secure remote access to specific University networks and systems. Using the VPN protects your data from being intercepted when using University computing resources from off-campus locations, ensuring your privacy.
Notice of Recent Change
The Office of Information Technology has recently made changes to the University's VPN infrastructure in the interests of safety and security. If you have previously had VPN access, an email message to helpdesk@boisestate.edu is all that is required for VPN access.
For those who have not previously had University VPN access, VPN network privileges must be requested through the OIT Help Desk (426.4357, or helpdesk@boisestate.edu).
A software client must be installed and configured to use the University VPN. You can install this software client on both University and personal computers. A broadband connection is required for VPN use, as a dial-up connection is extremely slow and unreliable.
How to Obtain and Install the VPN Software
You can obtain the VPN client software by checking out a Resource CD through the OIT Help Desk at 2710 W. Boise Ave. in Capitol Village, or through your college or area network administrator.
The University VPN software and use is provided free of charge to faculty and staff. There are no limits to your use of the VPN service; however, we ask you please disconnect your client when you are not using the service.
Supported computer operating systems:
- Windows Vista (clean install, not upgraded from Windows XP)
- Windows XP (requires Service Pack 2)
- Windows 2000 (requires Service Pack 6)
- Mac OS X 10.2 and above
There is no Cisco VPN client compatible with the University's VPN service for Windows 64-bit operating systems, Windows 95, Windows 98, Mac OS X 10.1 or earlier, or PDAs and other handheld computer platforms.
