Configuring iPhone and iPod Touch

Getting Started

Before beginning, please be sure you have read the information on configuring your account for mobile access and using your Google password (not your BroncoWeb password) on our Google Apps for Mobile Devices page.

What You Will Need

Before configuring your mobile device for Google Apps, you need to ensure your Gmail account is configured to enable IMAP and POP access.

In most circumstances, you will need to use your Google password (separate from your BroncoWeb password) for your connection. When prompted for a username during the configuration process, use your full email address (username@boisestate.edu)

If you have any problems making a connection, clear the captcha for your Google Apps account (use only your username, not your email address where prompted; enter your Google password).

Configuration Instructions

Google Apps can be accessed via three different methods:

  1. Using the Google Mobile App application to access Google Apps through the Safari web browser.

Accessing email through the Google Mobile Apps allows you to leverage several Gmail features like Advanced Search Operators to search your entire account, creation of Labels, Stars, using Conversation threading, and much more. You can also view Tasks, multiple Google Calendars, and all of your Google Docs.
  2. Using the native Email application for the iPhone/iPod Touch.

The Google Sync for iPhone configuration will allow you to see at a glance if you have new messages on the device, and provides basic email functionality.
  3. Configuring Google Sync to synchronize your Google Calendar and Google Contacts.

Some people prefer a combination of methods 1 & 2 to view email; this allows quick at-a-glance access to email, as well as the option via the web client to search your entire account and access additional features.

Configuration instructions for each of these methods are listed below:

Configuring the Google Mobile App

  1. The Google Mobile App is a free download from the Apps Store. Launch the Apps Store icon on the device, and search for "Google Mobile App." Install the application, then launch it.
  2. Click the Settings button at lower-right, and type boisestate.edu for 'Domain.' This will enable Boise State Mail, Calendar, Docs and Talk links within the application.

More info on using Google Mobile Applications for iPhone/iPod Touch is available on Google's website.

Configuring the Native Email Application

On the device, click the Settings icon.

  1. Click Mail, Contacts and Calendars.
  2. Click Add Account.
  3. Click Gmail.
  4. Enter the requested information, using your Google password (not your BroncoWeb password) where indicated.

Configuring Google Sync for Calendar and Contacts

Google This configuration will sync only your own Google Calendar with the device's native Calendar application, and will sync your Google Contacts. If you would like to access additional calendars, you'll need to use the Google Mobile Web (see info above).

To install and configure Google Sync for iPhone, see instructions on Google's website. Remember to use your Google (not your BroncoWeb) password.
