About Google Mail and Google Apps
Google Apps for Education is a service consisting of several applications branded for Boise State University, including email, calendaring, instant messaging and document storage and sharing.
Google Apps provides all students with document sharing, instant messaging, better spam control, massive amounts of disk space for e-mail storage, and decreased IT administration costs and labor.
BroncoMail powered by Google is the Google Apps for Education email service.
Security and Privacy Concerns
Unlike a personal Google Gmail account, Google Apps for Education does not display advertisements within applications, and as such Google does not view the contents of email messages, calendar appointments or documents.
The University was very concerned with security and privacy when entering into negotiations with Google, and those concerns were satisfied with detailed contract language ensuring security, privacy and ownership of all University data.
Additionally, the University Counsel's office and the State of Idaho reviewed the matter of security and privacy regarding Google Apps for Education and gave their blessings.
Logging In for the First time?
1. Log in to your BroncoMail Powered by Google account by opening a web browser and browsing to http://broncomail.u.boisestate.edu/
2. Use your BroncoWeb username and password to log in. Example:
Username: johnsmith
Password: ********
How to Reset Your BroncoMail Password
Your BroncoMail password is the same as your BroncoWeb password. This password expires every 90 days. You will receive no automated notification your password has expired.
To reset your BroncoMail password, browse to the BroncoWeb Home Page.
The University requires all computer system passwords to be a minimum of 8 characters in length, expire no more than every 90 days, and contain at least 1 numeric character and 1 special character (a special character is defined as any character not alphabetic or numeric, including a space). Additionally, you cannot use any password you've previously used within the last 365 days.
How to Set Your Google Password
You also now have a Google password for use with advanced Google features such as Google Talk and IMAP/POP. The Google password is not synchronized with your BroncoWeb or BroncoMail password and does not change every 90 days. You can set your Google password by clicking the Set your Google Password link at the bottom center of the login page at http://broncomail.u.boisestate.edu.
Policies
- General use of BroncoMail is governed by Boise State University's Computer Ethics Policy.
- The maximum number of recipients that you can send one email to is 50.
- Mass e-mail should only be sent to students for the purpose of making significant announcements, conveying important University business, or providing reminders of University events. Such e-mail should be compelling, brief and to the point. Guidelines and forms for mass e-mail requests can be found on the website of the Vice-President for Student Affairs
- As a security measure to prevent potential viruses, your mail account does not allow users to receive executable files (such as files ending in .exe) that could contain damaging executable code. Any message of this type sent to your mail account will be bounced back to the sender.
- Your mail account allows you to send and receive zipped attachments, as long as they don't contain executable files.
- With your mail account, you can send and receive messages up to 20 megabytes (MB) in size. However, the precise amount allowable will depend on the attachment.
- New students who apply, get accepted, enroll in a class and drop all their classes before the 10th day of the term will have their BroncoMail account deleted.
- Continuing students will have BroncoMail account access until they haven’t enrolled in a class for 6 consecutive semesters (2 years), at which time their account will be disabled.
- Graduating students will have their BroncoMail account access disabled after the 10th day after the term ends.
